Placidus vs Whole Sign Houses: What Changes?
House systems divide the chart by different rules. The planets do not move when the system changes, but house cusps and planet-in-house assignments can.

Bounded reading
At a glance
Three facts to keep.
- 01Placidus produces unequal houses from time-based diurnal arcs.
- 02Whole Sign assigns each zodiac sign to one complete house.
- 03Changing systems changes houses, not planetary longitudes.
01
The core difference
Placidus calculates intermediate cusps from the local movement of the celestial sphere, producing unequal house sizes. Whole Sign begins the first house at 0° of the rising sign and assigns each following sign to the next house.
| Feature | Placidus | Whole Sign |
|---|---|---|
| House size | Unequal | Exactly 30° |
| First-house start | Ascendant degree | 0° of rising sign |
| Intermediate cusps | Iterative geometric calculation | Sign boundaries |
| High-latitude behavior | Can be undefined or unstable | Always constructible once ASC sign is known |
02
What changes in a chart
The Sun, Moon, and planets keep the same ecliptic longitudes and zodiac signs. The house boundaries change, so a planet near a Placidus cusp may receive a different house number under Whole Sign.
- Natal aspects between planets remain the same.
- Aspects to the Ascendant or Midheaven remain tied to those angle degrees.
- Planet-in-house interpretations can change.
- A report should name the house system used.

AstroZen's fallback rule
AstroZen attempts Placidus cusps when exact time and location are available. If the method is undefined at the latitude, fails to converge, or produces an unstable cusp sequence, the engine uses Whole Sign houses and records a house-system note.
This fallback prevents a numerical failure from silently producing malformed cusps. It does not claim that Whole Sign is merely an approximation of Placidus; it is a distinct system disclosed for that chart.
04
How to compare readings
Hold the birth data and planetary positions constant, switch only the house system, and identify which planets change houses. Compare those specific interpretive statements rather than treating the entire chart as different.
Method note: Astrology has no scientifically validated house system. The important software properties are mathematical consistency, clear labeling, and no hidden fallback.

FAQ
Which is more accurate, Placidus or Whole Sign?
That is an interpretive-school question, not a settled scientific ranking. Choose a declared convention and compare how it is applied.
Does changing house systems change my rising sign?
No. The Ascendant degree remains the same for the same time and place; the way houses are divided changes.
Why does AstroZen sometimes use Whole Sign?
It is a disclosed fallback when Placidus is undefined or numerically unstable for the supplied latitude and time.
