Why the Ascendant and Houses Need a Birth Time
The Ascendant is a local horizon intersection, not a slow-moving planet. Change the time or place and the horizon changes, which moves the entire house framework.

Why the horizon moves through the zodiac
As Earth rotates, different ecliptic longitudes rise on the eastern horizon. The Ascendant calculation therefore needs the UTC instant plus the birthplace's latitude and longitude. It can change substantially within a short part of a day.
The Midheaven and house cusps are derived from the same local sky geometry. They are not recoverable from the calendar date alone.

What remains when time is unknown
Slow-moving planetary sign positions may remain stable across the date, but angles and houses do not. The Moon and occasionally another fast-moving point may also cross a sign boundary during the unknown interval and should be marked uncertain.

Why noon is not a neutral default
Substituting 12:00 creates one arbitrary sky orientation and can make a report sound exact. Noon may be useful for an explicitly labeled exploratory chart, but its Ascendant and houses are not evidence about an unknown birth time.
- Do not print a guessed Ascendant as a natal fact.
- Do not interpret planets in guessed houses.
- Do not include aspects to guessed angles.
- State which date-based placements remain stable across the full day.

AstroZen's unknown-time boundary
AstroZen date-only mode omits the Hour Pillar, Ascendant, Midheaven, houses, and time-dependent aspects. It also removes the Moon from interpretation when the missing time could change its sign, preserving uncertainty instead of hiding it.

Can I know my rising sign without a birth time?
Not reliably from the date alone. A range may sometimes be narrowed with external records, but a calculator should not present one exact rising sign without supporting time evidence.
How accurate does birth time need to be for houses?
Sensitivity varies by latitude and chart geometry. Minutes can matter near a cusp or sign boundary, so the report should preserve the record's actual precision.
Can I still get a useful chart without houses?
Yes, a date-based chart can discuss stable planetary positions with clear omissions. Its scope is narrower, not secretly complete.
