What true solar time means in a BaZi calculator

True solar time estimates the local Sun-based time at the birthplace rather than treating the wall clock as the final astronomical reference. AstroZen keeps the entered clock time, resolved civil time zone, longitude, standard meridian, and correction as separate fields so the result can be inspected.

Civil time is a legal and administrative system. A whole region may share one clock even though locations east and west of the zone's reference meridian experience solar noon at different moments. That longitude difference is the first part of the correction.

Earth's orbital geometry and axial tilt also make apparent solar time drift relative to mean solar time during the year. A date-dependent equation-of-time term accounts for that smaller variation.

The calculation sequence

AstroZen applies a transparent sequence: resolve the historical civil-time offset, derive the standard meridian from that offset, calculate longitude and equation-of-time terms, round the combined correction to a minute, then recalculate the local date and branch interval.

A worked boundary example

In AstroZen's published Madrid test case, 08:30 civil time on 15 June 1992 is evaluated with longitude −3.70256° and a +02:00 standard-time meridian of 30°. The calculated true solar time is 06:15, a shift large enough to matter to an Hour Pillar.

That example is intentionally difficult: Spain's civil clock is far ahead of local mean solar time during summer. It demonstrates why substituting a fixed China-based 120° meridian for every country would be wrong.

A Shanghai test on 15 January 1990 produces only a small shift around the UTC+8 reference meridian. The method therefore does not assume every chart needs a dramatic correction.

What this method can and cannot settle

The arithmetic can be tested, but the interpretive convention remains a tradition. Different BaZi schools may choose civil time, mean solar time, apparent solar time, or different rules around the Zi hour. A responsible calculator should state its convention instead of presenting one choice as undisputed fact.

  • Check the recorded birthplace and historical time zone before debating the final pillar.
  • Review cases within roughly one correction window of 23:00, midnight, or a two-hour branch boundary.
  • Treat a changed pillar as a calculation consequence, not proof of a life prediction.

FAQ

Is true solar time the same as local mean solar time?

Not exactly. Local mean solar time uses longitude relative to a standard meridian. Apparent true solar time also includes the date-dependent equation of time. AstroZen includes both terms.

Can true solar time change the BaZi day pillar?

It can when the correction crosses the calculator's day boundary. That is why the adjusted date is part of the result rather than only the adjusted hour.

Does every BaZi school require true solar time?

No. Time conventions differ among practitioners and software. The useful standard is to disclose the chosen rule and let readers review boundary-sensitive cases.
